Virtual Support Group In Response to COVID-19

Recognizing that COVID-19 measures have only heightened the levels of stress and anxiety, sense of loss and grief, we are offering a virtual drop-in group through Better Life Counselling Center.

The group would be 60-75 minutes, once a week in the evenings. Group members can register and attend.

Group content will address:
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques
  • Strategies to handle difficult emotions
  • Tools to manage negative thinking.

Many of us have been following the news updates, Public Health Recommendations and other messages that are shared by family and friends, from across the globe, about COVID-19. Working from home and ‘with home’, has been  with us now,  for more than 8 weeks.
There is no clear deadline  that one can look forward to.  In addition , there is now some speculation of a second wave of the virus,  in the Fall of 2020.  When many things are uncertain, when routines have been disrupted, when individuals are called upon to maintain their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others close to them, stress and anxiety reaches higher levels. Fears about the unknowns, especially about the  future of financial conditions, health and ability to connect with family and friends both within the city and far away,  loom large and scary.

Along with uncertainty many are experiencing a  sense of loss:  the many losses of the known, the familiar and the predictable. Reaching out for help when emotional distress is hurting us and those who care about us, is not only helpful but also essential. Developing and maintaining healthy relationships with spouse, young children, adult children and elderly parents and extended family and friends can be very challenging for a variety of reasons. Not being understood, feeling one is being judged and rejected, not being able to keep up with the expectations placed on you, can contribute to stress and emotional pain in relationships. As human beings we thrive on healthy relationships. In the absence of this, life itself may seem overwhelming or not worth living.
